Watney’s Road Street Sign Unreadable
Reported via iOS in the Damage to Street Furniture category anonymously at 10:31, Wed 15 May 2024
Sent to Merton Council less than a minute later. Council ref: SRQ-1097526-G4N0W1.
The Wantneys Road street sign has sunken deep into the overgrown road-side hedges. This is a safety concern. If there were ever an emergency on this road then responding units could struggle to find this road. It has also tilted due to the roots pushing it. The hedges have to be cut back and the sign put upright. The area is bordering the common but the issue is on council land. Please do not respond by saying this is a Common issue - a street sign would not be placed on Common land. Thank you

Is there any update on this?
So far no work has been done to cut the street sign free.

This has been passed to our Highways department as the cutting back is done by the Commons people and not a litter problem as such.

Hello, your last response was not totally clear. Who will actually fix this issue and when? The Highways department or the Common? As I mentioned before, this area is in the area around the common that the council is or at least should be responsible for. The budget for the Common has been slashed drastically and out of 4 care takers we now only have 1. This person is already stretched thin trying to maintain the interior of the common.
Most importantly this is about the area that contains a street signs and should therefore be dealt with by the council.
The area was last cut back or in any way maintained over at least 10 years ago and it would be great to see a basic level of maintenance. Cut the hedges, fix the signs, maybe paint the gate... I reported this now back in May.

Someone attended to this today and also the sign is now readable from the front it is still covered when viewed from the pavement or at just a slight angle. Basically, there is now a small tunnel cut into the hedge to look through to the sign. The whole area needs to be cleared. You can see how much the no-entry sign is overgrown. The entire corner needs to be cut back to give a clear view of the sign and street entrance.
