Oversized tree too close to property and roots trip hazards

Reported via desktop in the Dangerous Street Tree category anonymously at 11:53, Tue 12 August 2025

Sent to Merton Council less than a minute later. Council ref: SRQ-1243729-G6M6L9.

The street tree outside number 11 is now within a metre of property and also branches are under 5m within the road. The root ball is also so large that the pathway area around the trunk is severely uneven and a big trip hazard for particularly blind and elderly people.

Updates

  • As our latest inspection, the branches still have a distance from the houses. 1m from inhabited home is a standard we set for expecting the tree branches may grow and reach the inhabited home within 3 years, our routine inspection period, and cause actionable legal nuisance. We have prescribed to cut back the branches during routine maintenance. Please understand that we are unable to maintain all street trees simultaneously. Borough-wide tree maintenance is prioritised by risk to public safety, so lower-risk trees will be addressed as work progresses on higher-risk ones. We apologise for not being able to provide a specific date at this time, but we are managing the work as efficiently as possible within our resource limits. According to tree policy guideline, for residential roads without double deck buse or heavy goods vehicles, we keep height clearance of 3m instead 5m We understand that the roots of street trees can sometimes cause damage to roads or pavements. Our Highways team have maintenance programme in place to repair any damage and prevent trip hazards. This upkeep is part of the shared cost of enjoying the many benefits that street trees bring to our community. If you notice pavement damage that needs extra attention, please report it separately using the link below for a fast response and updates: https://www.merton.gov.uk/ streets-parking-transport/ streets-and-pavements/ dangerous-paving
