Traffic chaos and impact on air pollution and residents

Sent to Merton Council less than a minute later. Council ref: SRQ-1247107-F9J9N9.
The Thames Water works on Kingston Road -which has led to a temporary traffic light and the closure of half the road- just 5 minutes from the total closure of Merton Road are causing traffic chaos on the adjacent roads with huge queues of idling cars, re-routed buses and lorries. This is impacting local residents' health and access to reliable transport in a major way: 1. The air pollution is awful because of the long queues of idling traffic and this is affecting residents especially those who suffer from breathing issues like me. Every time I have to walk past the idling traffic, my breathing gets worse and I feel ill afterwards for hours. This is creating a public health problem. 2. The traffic jams and the rerouting of all the bus routes in the area are making buses very unreliable for residents who rely on public transport. This is particularly acute for people like me who have mobility issues. I have had to resort to walking very slowly with my walking aid to the tram stop to go to Wimbledon as the buses take 25 minutes from South Wimbledon to Hartfield Road and vice versa. This is difficult for people with poor mobility. Moreover, residents with cars are also struggling to drive in and out of this area due to the traffic jams which get very bad at peak times. 3. The combination of Thames Water works on Kingston Road and the closure of Merton Road 5 minutes away due to other works shows poor planning on the part of the Merton Council highway authority and network management team with a lack of impact assessment on the most vulnerable residents' lives. I would like to know why both sets of road works (Merton Road and Kingston Road) were allowed at the same time creating a gridlock in the area. 4. Every time I walk past the roadworks in Merton Road and Kingston Road there is no work going on. This is in breach the roadworks regulations to keep London moving. I would like Merton Council to hold providers carrying out the works accountable and ensure that they complete these in the shortest amount of time, working nights and weekends if necessary to minimise disruption. It is worth mentioning that residents in the Abbey Ward have been disproportionately affected by roadworks in the last few months which is unfair and again shows poor coordination and planning.
