Reported via desktop in the Other Street Tree Problem category anonymously at 14:23, Wed 17 September 2025

Sent to Merton Council less than a minute later. Council ref: SRQ-1254880-N6B2Q3.

The street tree in front of 32, Kingsley road SW19 8HF has become too large, blocking light and branches dangerous in high winds to people on the pavement and parked cars. This tree should not be removed but needs a hard cutting back for safety reasons.

  • Thank you for your report. As our latest routine inspection, this tree is in good condition and low risk category. There is no set size for a tree. Trees are expected to grow up and large that taking in more carbon to mitigate climate change. There is no ‘right to light’ in relation to trees, in either statutory law or under common law. Council trees will not be pruned to improve light penetration into properties. Tree maintenance would not necessarily include the reduction of the height or overall size of a tree. The height / size of trees does not make them any more dangerous than those which are smaller. Council does not reduce the height / size of trees as a matter of course, as this can stimulate rapid regrowth and/or cause significant defects in the tree’s structure, which are later hard to detect. This will also significantly reduce various values of a tree that serve the wider community.
