Severe Plough Lane congestion

Reported via mobile in the Other Roads or Carriageway issue category anonymously at 15:38, Saturday 20 September 2025

Sent to Merton Council less than a minute later. Council ref: SRQ-1255636-G3X8Z7.

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing to raise my concerns about the growing traffic issues along Plough Lane, particularly around the football stadium, the nearby shopping area, and the junction by the traffic lights.

While the new developments in the area bring a welcome sense of growth and activity, the current road infrastructure is not keeping up with demand. Traffic on Plough Lane has become a serious problem on a weekly basis, with congestion especially severe at weekends and during peak times. Drivers are becoming increasingly frustrated, which in turn leads to people ignoring road rules at the many roundabouts, creating a significant risk of accidents.

One of the major pinch points is the shopping area by Lidl. The site currently has two entrances but only one exit, which causes unnecessary queues and worsens the congestion on Plough Lane. A system with two entrances and two exits would allow traffic to flow far more smoothly.

In the longer term, it seems essential to look at larger-scale solutions. An additional crossing point over the River Wandle nearby would help to ease the pressure on this stretch of road and provide a much-needed alternative route for vehicles. Without such measures, the situation will only deteriorate as footfall and car use continue to increase with the growth around the stadium.

I appreciate that addressing these problems is not straightforward, but the current level of congestion is unsustainable and increasingly unsafe. I urge the council to prioritise a review of this area and to consider both short- and long-term improvements before matters worsen further.
