Overgrown vegetation obstructing pavement

Reported in the Overhanging Vegetation From Private Land category anonymously at 15:51, Thursday 23 October 2025

Sent to Merton Council less than a minute later. Council ref: SRQ-1261554-P2G3Q7.

The hedge has overgrown to the point where it takes up half of the payment. The hedge is at least a metre beyond private property. Due the tree and lamp post on the same section of the street it means that people can only walk single file here. It causes a problem when there are mutiple pedestrians not to mention strollers or shopping bags. Therefore, the hedge needs to be cut back at least to the private property line.

Updates

  • Thank you for reporting overhanging vegetation.

If plants or trees on private land are blocking the street, we’ll ask the owner to cut them back. If they don’t do this within 28 days, we’ll write to them again giving them 14 days further notice and if action is still not taken we will arrange for the work to be done at the owner's expense.

    Did you know…?
In 2024 we issued 469 notices to owners of property with vegetation overhanging the public highway.
