Subject: Request for Maintenance of Tree Causing Persistent Smell and Mess
Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing to raise an ongoing issue that occurs every year during the autumn and winter months. The tree located infront of our house on 447 London Road regularly drops large amounts of leaves and fruit, which create a very unpleasant smell. The odour spreads directly into our home, clings to clothing, and even affects our car. It has become extremely difficult to manage, and our guests have also commented on the strong, unpleasant smell.
Although we have tried cleaning the area repeatedly, the issue persists as the tree continues to shed fruit and leaves. The situation has become a recurring nuisance each year.
We would therefore like to request that the council take action to address this problem — ideally by trimming or cutting back the tree’s branches to reduce the amount of falling debris and the associated smell.
We would appreciate your attention to this matter and look forward to your response
Please contact me on 07491906265 or email maryam2312@hotmail.co.uk
Kind regards,
Musarat Afzal

Thank you for reporting a problem with a street tree.
We aim to inspect street tree problems within 10 working days of being reported, or 2 hours if the tree is dangerous. We aim to carry out any necessary work within 30 working days.
Did you know…?
We care for more than 20,000 street trees in Merton, including pruning, pollarding, and planting hundreds each year to keep streets green, safe, and walkable.

Sorry for the inconvenience caused by street trees. Trimming trees to reduce leaf or fruit fall is not in line with Tree Policy, as it would require a significant canopy reduction for only temporary effect and would carry environmental costs. The issue has been referred to the Street Cleaning Team for attention.
