Maycross Avenue - Highway Safety Concern – Street Tree Root Encroachment and Pavement Damage Risk

Reported via mobile in the Damage Caused By a Street Tree category anonymously at 08:40, Thursday 12 February 2026

Sent to Merton Council less than a minute later. Council ref: SRQ-1272627-S1Z3H7.

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am requesting a formal highway safety and arboricultural assessment of the council-owned tree located outside my property in 18 Maycross Avenue, SM4 4DA.

The structural roots of this street tree have expanded significantly beyond the tree pit and are now occupying pedestrian space and encroaching into the adjacent paved surface.

The root system is creating progressive deformation of the ground and presents an ongoing risk of pavement damage and trip hazard. The extent of the surface rooting indicates the tree is incompatible with the constrained pavement environment and is likely to continue causing highway maintenance issues.

In addition, the expansion of the root plate obstructs practical vehicle access to my driveway and interferes with normal lawful use of the property.

This places my property at a disproportionate disadvantage compared to neighbouring properties which have unobstructed driveway access.

I request a highway safety and arboricultural inspection to assess the extent of the infrastructure conflict and determine appropriate remedial action.

Please confirm when a site inspection can be arranged.

Thank you,

Kind regards
