Abandoned Roadworks

Reported in the Other Roads or Carriageway issue category anonymously at 19:26, Monday 16 February 2026

Sent to Merton Council less than a minute later. Council ref: SRQ-1273062-J0D1G9.

Your ref: MU093MCW-SL-07115744-02 These roadworks have been inert for around two weeks. The Merton Council website gives a completion date of 6 February.

The five day period stated on this website for the council to investigate has elapsed since the previous report, with no meaningful update on the website.

It was claimed that there would be a twenty-four on-site presence to deal with traffic control. This does not appear to be so.

Trenches are open to the environment and are at risk of malicious damage.

The first phase of the work began in mid November. To describe the work as emergency repairs to a fire hydrant would seem to be inaccurate. Emergency repairs should not require two months and should not stagnate for days to weeks at a time.

Some residents are deprived of access to their garages. One local business appears to have been required to close and another may have restricted access.

Does Merton Council intend to discharge its duty to residents and address this issue promptly by holding Thames Water to account, or should the local residents assume that the open trenches, exposed water main, impaired vehicle access and barriers are to be a permanent feature of their roads?
