Request for Temporary Parking Suspension – Motspur Park / Claremont Avenue Junction

Reported via desktop in the Other Roads or Carriageway issue category anonymously at 13:23, Wednesday 4 March 2026

Sent to Merton Council less than a minute later. Council ref: SRQ-1274965-L1Y2R3.

I am writing regarding the current roadworks at the junction of Motspur Park and Claremont Avenue, which are blocking the main road access.

As a result, traffic from West Barnes Lane is being diverted through the smaller residential road to merge into Motspur Park. This road normally permits parking on both sides.

Due to the railway level crossing in Motspur Park, traffic frequently queues while waiting for the barrier to reopen. When this queuing traffic combines with vehicles parked on both sides of the narrow road, it significantly restricts movement. At times this blocks vehicles attempting to access or exit West Barnes Lane, creating congestion and potential safety risks.

I would like to suggest that the council consider implementing a temporary parking suspension (either single-side or both sides if necessary) for the duration of the roadworks. This would:

• Improve traffic flow during peak times • Reduce the risk of gridlock caused by level crossing queues • Improve access for emergency vehicles • Reduce driver frustration and unsafe manoeuvres

This would be a temporary and proportionate measure in response to changed traffic patterns caused by the roadworks.

Thank you for your consideration. I would appreciate it if this matter could be reviewed urgently given the daily congestion currently occurring.
