Urgent Request for Temporary Parking Restrictions – West Barnes Lane / Claremont Avenue Roadworks

Reported via desktop in the Obstruction on a Road or Pavement category anonymously at 09:14, Tuesday 17 March 2026

Sent to Merton Council less than a minute later. Council ref: SRQ-1276423-F1L5D0.

I am writing to raise concerns regarding the current roadworks blocking the junction between West Barnes Lane and Claremont Avenue.

As a result of the closure, traffic is being diverted through a narrow section of West Barnes Lane (between the railway level crossing and Blakes Lane / Blakes Terrace). This section effectively operates like a small alley and is not designed to accommodate the current volume of diverted traffic.

The situation is further exacerbated by vehicles parked on both sides of the road. When combined with queuing traffic caused by the railway level crossing, this frequently results in severe congestion, with traffic becoming effectively gridlocked. Vehicles are often unable to pass in either direction, and access to and from adjoining roads is significantly obstructed.

This creates: • A risk of complete traffic blockage • Difficulty for residents entering/exiting the area • Potential delays for emergency service vehicles • Increased likelihood of unsafe driving manoeuvres

To mitigate these issues, I would strongly urge the council to consider implementing a temporary parking suspension (on one or both sides of the affected stretch of West Barnes Lane) for the duration of the roadworks.

This would be a proportionate and practical measure to maintain traffic flow and safety during this period of disruption.

Given the severity of the congestion, I would appreciate urgent consideration of this request.
